The promulgation of Employees State Insurance Act, 1948 by the Parliament was the first major legislation on social Security for workers in independent India. The ESI Act 1948 encompasses certain health related eventualities that the workers are generally exposed to; such as sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent disablement, occupational disease or death due to employment injury, resulting in loss of wages or earning capacity-total or partial.
Full medical care is provided to an insured person and his family members from the day he enters insurable employment. There is no ceiling on expenditure on the treatment of an Insured Person or his family member. Medical care is also provided to retired and permanently disabled insured persons and their spouses on payment of a token annual premium of Rs.120.
The number of hospitals of Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in India was 151 as on April 2016. The top 10 states in terms of the number of hospitals of ESIC were: Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh as on April 2016.
The number of hospitals of ESIC in Uttar Pradesh was 16 as on April 2016. It accounted for 10.6% of the number of hospitals of ESIC in India as on April 2016.
The number of hospitals of ESIC in West Bengal was 14 as on April 2016. It accounted for 9.27% of the number of hospitals of ESIC in India as on April 2016. The number of hospitals of ESIC in Kerala was 13 as on April 2016. It accounted for 8.61% of the number of hospitals of ESIC in India as on April 2016.
The number of hospitals of ESIC in Maharashtra was 13 as on April 2016. It accounted for 8.61% of the number of hospitals of ESIC in India as on April 2016. The number of hospitals of ESIC in Gujarat was 12 as on April 2016. It accounted for 7.95% of the number of hospitals of ESIC in India as on April 2016.
These top 5 states accounted for 45.04% of the total number of hospitals of ESIC in India as a whole as on April 2016. Each of these top 5 states has more than 10 hospitals of ESIC.
The number of hospitals of ESIC in Karnataka was 10 as on April 2016 (6.62% of All India). The number of hospitals of ESIC in Tamil Nadu was 10 as on April 2016 (6.62% of All India). The number of hospitals of ESIC in Punjab was 8 as on April 2016 (5.3% of All India). The number of hospitals of ESIC in Haryana was 7 as on April 2016 (4.64% of All India). The number of hospitals of ESIC in Madhya Pradesh was 7 as on April 2016 (4.64% of All India).
The above mentioned top 10 states accounted for 72.86% of the total number of hospitals of ESIC in India as a whole as on April 2016.
