The top 10 states in terms of the total population of prison inmates in district jails at the end of 2014 were: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Assam and West Bengal.
The number of prison inmates in India at the end of 2014 was 179695. Out of these, the number of males was 172165, while the number of females was 7530. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 95.81%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 4.19%.
The number of prison inmates in Uttar Pradesh at the end of 2014 was 74637. Out of these, the number of males was 71494, while the number of females was 3143. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 95.79%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 4.21%.
The number of prison inmates in Bihar at the end of 2014 was 16622. Out of these, the number of males was 16014, while the number of females was 608. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 96.34%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 3.66%.
The number of prison inmates in Haryana at the end of 2014 was 14581. Out of these, the number of males was 13949, while the number of females was 632. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 95.67%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 4.33%.
The number of prison inmates in Madhya Pradesh at the end of 2014 was 10681. Out of these, the number of males was 10158, while the number of females was 523. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 95.1%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 4.9%.
The number of prison inmates in Jharkhand at the end of 2014 was 8024. Out of these, the number of males was 7580, while the number of females was 444. Thus, the percentage of male prison inmates was 94.47%, while the percentage of female prison inmates was 5.53%.
