The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in India was 4820 at the end of year 2013. Out of these, the number of males was 4456, while the number of females was 364. Thus, the percentage of male inmates was 92.45%, while the percentage of female inmates was 7.55%.
The top 10 States/UTs with largest number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness at the end of year 2013 were as follows: the number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Gujarat was 633. Out of these, the number of males was 602, while the number of females was 31. Thus, the percentage of male inmates was 95.1%, while the percentage of female inmates was 4.9%. The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Orissa was 577 (males 566 and females 11). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Andhra Pradesh was 409 (males 386 and females 23). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Madhya Pradesh was 366 (males 355 and females 11). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Uttar Pradesh was 349 (males 309 and females 40). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in West Bengal was 306 (males 278 and females 28). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Kerala was 296 (males 289 and females 7). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Karnataka was 283 (males 271 and females 12). The number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Rajasthan was 260 (males 247 and females 13) and the number of prison inmates suffering from mental illness in Delhi was 211 (males 158 and females 53).
