The number of stations of the Indian Railways was 6853 in 2000-01. It increased to 7112 in 2013-14.
The number of stations in the Broad Gauge category in 2000-01 was 5261. The number of stations in the Broad Gauge category in 2001-02 was 5338. It recorded 1.46% growth over the previous year. The number of stations in the Broad Gauge category in 2013-14 was 6591. It recorded 0.21% growth over the previous year. The total growth recorded during 2000-01 to 2013-14 was 25.28%.
The number of stations in Metre Gauge category in 2000-01 was 1318. The number of stations in Metre Gauge category in 2001-02 was 1310. It recorded -0.61% decline over the previous year. The number of stations in Metre Gauge category in 2013-14 was 315. It recorded -16.89% decline over the previous year. The total decline recorded during 2000-01 to 2013-14 was -76.1%.
The number of stations in Narrow Gauge category in 2000-01 was 274. The number of stations in Narrow Gauge category in 2001-02 was 283. It recorded 3.28% growth over the previous year. The number of stations in Narrow Gauge category in 2013-14 was 206. It recorded -4.63% decline over the previous year. The total decline recorded during 2000-01 to 2013-14 was -24.82%.
The decline in the number of the stations in the Metre Gauge and Narrow Gauge categories was mainly due to the gauge conversion from Metre Gauge and Narrow Gauge categories to Broad Gauge category during 2000-01 to 2013-14.
