Background
Nagpur Smart City is providing various ICT-based services to citizens, Wi-Fi service being one of them. Currently, the city is providing Wi-Fi service free of cost on a daily basis at more than 250 locations through more than 1,000 Access Points installed across the city. While using Wi-Fi services, a huge amount of data is being generated about the service delivery. So we decided to get insights into this data to help the city in improving the service.
Analysis
Diving deep into the data first we tried to understand the location-wise data usage across the city. While analyzing the data we were able to categorize the locations in High and Low data usage locations. Based on this, we were planning to do survey on the area of less data utilization and people aware about our Wi-Fi services.
Further, we could analyze the total number of users registered for our service by connecting to our Wi-Fi network. We also segregated the number of users connected to specific access points installed at particular locations. Through this, we came to know the locations with high traffic or high user connectivity. This helped us gain insights into where we should be increasing the access points to extend the network connectivity range.
Also, we segregated the total active users according to different Wi-Fi plans provided by Nagpur Smart City. This helped us evaluate the cumulative data needs of the users. Further, we categorized the users based on the devices used by them to connect the Wi-Fi network.
We could also analyze the timings during the day when total data usage is at the peak. Thus enabling us to ensure our network is working as per requirements during the peak hours.
Outcomes
The insights from the above analysis have helped the city improve the Wi-Fi network coverage. This has been made possible due to the detailed analysis resulting in information regarding where we have to extend our network, where we have to conduct awareness programs, and also plan about monetization of the service. Due to this citizens can now get unlimited and uninterrupted Internet access all over the city with most affordable service charges.
