Road accidents occur due to multiple causes. Some of the causes are use of Mobile phone, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol/ drug, overloaded Vehicle, poor light condition, jumping red light, over speeding, overtaking, neglect of civic bodies, weather condition, driving on wrong side, defect in road condition, defect in condition of motor vehicle, fault of cyclist and fault of pedestrian etc.
There were 14,894 , 14,071 and 12,018 road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India from 2016 to 2018 respectively. We have seen annual decline of -5.53% during 2017 and -14.59% during 2018 in road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India during 2018 were Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
The number of road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug was 3,595 in Uttar Pradesh during 2018, which accounted 29.91% of the total road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India. There were 1,345 road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in Madhya Pradesh during 2018. It accounted 11.19% of the total road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India during the same period. The number of road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in Orissa was 1,220 during 2018, which accounted 10.15% of the total road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India. Annual growth of 7.76%, -34.84% and -20.42% has been observed in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa respecively in road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug during 2018.
During 2018, there were 1,128 and 893 road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh respectively. Tamil Nadu accounted for 9.39% and Madhya Pradesh accounted for 7.43% of the total road accidents due to drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol & drug in India during 2018.
