Road Accidents by Districts in Tamil Nadu as per Statistical Hand Book 2019

Road accidents occur due to multiple causes like usage of Mobile phones while driving, drunken driving / consumption of alcohol / drug, overloaded Vehicle, poor light condition, jumping red light, over speeding, overtaking, neglect of civic bodies, weather condition, driving on wrong side, defect in road condition, defect in condition of motor vehicle, fault of cyclist and fault of pedestrian etc.

Based on the accidents data published in the Statistical Hand Book of Tamil Nadu 2019 by the Department of Economics and Statistics, the graph shown below describes the Number of Road Accidents happened in Tamil Nadu, during the period 2017-18.

Based on the graph generated below, Out of 63,920 accidents happened in Tamil Nadu in 2017-18, Chennai city leads in all aspects, with 7580 number of accidents and the Nilgiris district stays low with 228 numbers of accidents.

The districts namely Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram and Vellore districts holds the consecutive places next to Chennai City in the number of accidents happened.
