State/UT-wise Suicides in India due to Bankruptcy or Indebtedness during 2018

There were 4,970 (3.69%) suicides due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in India out of 134,516 suicides during 2018. Out of these 4,970 suicides due to bankruptcy or indebtedness during 2018; 4,508 (90.7%), 462 (9.3%) and 0 (0%) suicides were committed by male, female and transgender persons respectively. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness during 2018 were Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The number of persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness was 1,541 in Maharashtra during 2018, which accounted 31.01% of the total persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in India. Out of 1,541 suicides in Maharashtra; 1475 (95.72%) were male, 66 (4.28%) were female and 0 was transgender. There were 1,391 suicides due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in Karnataka during 2018. It accounted 27.99% of the total persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in India during the same period. Out of 1,391 suicides in Karnataka; 1,301 (93.53%), 90 (6.47%) and 0 were male, female and transgender respectively. The number of persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness was 684 in Telangana during 2018, which accounted 13.76% of the total persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in India. Out of 684 suicides in Telangana; 549 (80.26%) were male, 135 (19.74%) were female and 0 was transgender.

During 2018, there were 376 and 264 suicides due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively. Andhra Pradesh accounted for 7.57% and Tamil Nadu accounted for 5.31% of the total persons committed suicide due to bankruptcy or indebtedness in India during 2018.
