Top 10 Metro Cities with respect to Houses Sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) during 2017-18

The Central Government has launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY (U)) on 25 June, 2015 to facilitate the efforts of States / Union Territories (UTs) to address the housing shortage among the urban poor. The Government has taken various initiatives to improve the performance under PMAY (U) so as to provide Housing for All by 2022.

The total number of 5,81,581 houses sanctioned under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18, up by 211.4% against 1,86,784 during 2016-17. The top 10 metro cities with respect to houses sanctioned under PMAY (U) during 2017-18 were Bangalore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Chennai, Ranchi, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Raipur and Ahmedabad.

The number of houses sanctioned for Bangalore under PMAY (U) was 1,14,261 during 2017-18, up by 4,195.5% versus 2,660 during 2016-17. We have observed annual growth of 88,373.8% in sanction of houses under PMAY (U) for Hyderabad from 107 during 2016-17 to 94,667 during 2017-18. The number of houses sanctioned for Visakhapatnam was 19 under PMAY (U) in 2016-17. It has increased by 3,03,478.9% to 57,680 during 2017-18 above 2016-17. Bangalore, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam accounted for 19.65%, 16.28% and 9.92% respectively of the total houses sanctioned under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18.

There was sanction of 28,268 and 27,643 houses under PMAY (U) for Vijayawada and Chennai respectively during 2017-18. Vijayawada accounted for 4.86% and Chennai accounted for 4.75% of the total houses sanctioned under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18.

During 2017-18, the number of houses sanctioned under PMAY (U) for Ranchi, Jabalpur, Bhopal, Raipur and Ahmedabad was 24,912, 18,989, 16,412, 13,525 and 12,283 respectively.
