State/UT-wise Persons Killed in Road Accidents on National Highways from 2015 to 2018

There were 53,181 persons killed in road accidents on national highways (NHs) in India during 2017. It has surged by 163 basis points to 54,046 during 2018 against 2017. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons killed in road accidents on NHs during 2018 were Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan.

The number of persons killed in road accidents on NHs in Uttar Pradesh was 8,818 during 2018, up by 10.97% versus 7,946 during 2017. We have observed annual decline of -23.76% in persons killed in road accidents on NHs in Tamil Nadu from 5,892 during 2017 to 4,492 during 2018. The number of persons killed in road accidents on NHs in Maharashtra was 3,637 during 2017. It has increased by 12.4% to 4,088 during 2018 above 2017. Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra accounted for 16.32%, 8.31% and 7.56% respectively of the total persons killed in road accidents on NHs in India during 2018.

During 2018, there were 3,986 and 3,874 persons killed in road accidents on NHs in Karnataka and Rajasthan respectively. Karnataka accounted for 7.38% and Rajasthan accounted for 7.17% of the total persons killed in road accidents on NHs in India during 2018.
