NCRB’s Crime in India Datasets on Open Government Data Portal

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under Ministry of Home Affairs was set up to function as a repository of information on crime and criminals to assist the investigators in linking crime to the perpetrators. The mission was to empower Indian Police with Information Technology and criminal intelligence to enable them to uphold law and protect people.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, NCRB has been sharing the statistical crime data on Open Government Data Platform. Presently OGD has NCRB’s annual statistical data till the year 2018 in the following categories:

1. Crime in India: The Crime in India datasets offer comprehensive information on cases registered and their disposal, persons arrested and their disposal under major heads of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special & Local Law (SLL), with details like age and sex of persons arrested under these crime-heads. There are specific datasets for some vulnerable sections of the society – women, children, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, and senior citizens.

2. Prison Statistics data: The Prison Statistics data offer information on prisons, prison infrastructures, details of prisoners such as their age, sex, educational profile, crime/offence for which they have been convicted etc.

3. Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI): The Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI) data contains information on victims of accidental death and suicide with details pertaining to victims location (State/UT to which he/she belonged), age, sex, profession he/she was involved, means adopted for suicide etc.
