There were 1849 blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational in public health facilities of India as on July, 2016. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of maximum blood storages facilities operational in public health facilities as on July-2016 were Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Among all the States/UTs of India, Lakshadweep is the only one which had 0 (zero) blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational in public health facilities as on July, 2016.
The number of blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational was 339 in Tamil Nadu as on July-2016, which accounted 18.3% of the total blood storages facilities operational in India. There were 219 blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational in Maharashtra as on July, 2016. It accounted 11.8% of the total blood storages facilities operational in India as on July, 2016. The number of blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational was 132 in Rajasthan as on July-2016, which accounted 7.1% of the total blood storages facilities operational in India.
There were 130 and 113 blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh respectively as on July, 2016. Karnataka accounted for 7% and Madhya Pradesh accounted for 6.1% of the total blood storages facilities operational in India as on July-2016.
The above mentioned top 5 states accounted for 50.5% of the total number of blood banks/ blood storage units established and operational in India as a whole as on July, 2016.
