Women Officers Commissioned in the Defence Forces during 2016 to 2018

Various measures have been taken by the Government to attract the women to join the armed forces. Women Short Service Commission Officers (SSCOs) have been approved grant of permanent commission along with men SSCOs in specific branches in the three services viz. Judge Advocate General (JAG), and Army Education Corps (AEC) of the Army and their corresponding branches in Navy and Air Force, Naval Constructor in Navy and Accounts Branch in Air Force.

In March 2016, approval was accorded for induction of women Short Service Commission (SSC) officers as Pilots in Maritime Reconnaissance (MR) stream and in the Naval Armament Inspectorate (NAI) cadre.

In the Indian Air Force since 1993, women officers have been inducted in all branches and stream as Short Service Commissioned Officers except in the fighter stream. However, IAF has revised Short Service Commission scheme to induct women into the fighter stream on experimental basis for five years. The first batch of three women officers was commissioned in the fighter stream on June 18, 2016.

In total there were 2543 women officers commissioned in the Defence Forces during 2016 to 2018, out of which the number of women officers commissioned was 616, 1051 and 876 in 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. The number of women officer commissioned in the Defence Forces was 75 in Army, 29 in Navy, 59 in Air Force and 713 in Army Medical Corps, Dental Corps & Military Nursing Service (Common for three forces) during 2018.

The Number of women officers commissioned was 210 in Army during 2016 to 2018, which accounted 8.26% of the total number of women officers commissioned in Defence Forces during the same period. The Number of women officers commissioned was 115 in Navy during 2016 to 2018. It Accounted 4.52% of the total number of women officers commissioned in Defence Forces during 2016 to 2018. The Number of women officers commissioned was 226 in Air Force and 1992 in Army Medical Corps, Dental Corps & Military Nursing Service (Common for three forces), which accounted 8.89% and 78.33% of the total number of women officers commissioned during the same period.
