Top 10 States/UTs with highest fiscal deficit as percentage of GSDP – 2013-14 (BE)

The 10 States/UTs with highest level of fiscal deficit as percentage of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) – 2013-14 Budgeted Expenditure (BE) are: Goa (-19.15% fiscal deficit as a percentage of GSDP); Haryana (-13.75% fiscal deficit); Mizoram (-6.3% fiscal deficit); Himachal Pradesh (-5.76% fiscal deficit); Manipur (-4.25% fiscal deficit); Tripura (-3.28% fiscal deficit); Karnataka (-2.99% fiscal deficit); Punjab (-2.92% fiscal deficit); Uttarakhand (-2.89% fiscal deficit) and Andhra Pradesh (-2.86% fiscal deficit).

The fiscal deficit of these 10 States/UTs as percentage of GSDP during the previous year i.e. 2012-13 (Pre. Actual) respectively was: Goa (-4.76% fiscal deficit as a percentage of GSDP); Haryana (-3% fiscal deficit); Mizoram (7.04% fiscal deficit); Himachal Pradesh (-4.04% fiscal deficit); Manipur (-0.01% fiscal deficit); Tripura (1.41% fiscal deficit); Karnataka (-2.79% fiscal deficit); Punjab (-3.28% fiscal deficit); Uttarakhand (-1.48% fiscal deficit) and Andhra Pradesh (-2.32% fiscal deficit).

Thus, all these states except Punjab had shown an increase in the level of fiscal deficit as percentage of GSDP during the year of 2013-14 (BE) as compared to fiscal deficit of these 10 States/UTs during the previous year of 2012-13 (Pre. Actual). Among these states, Mizoram and Tripura had fiscal surplus during 2012-13 (Pre. Actual).

Note: Fiscal Deficit as % of GSDP figures from 1997-98 to 2013-14 (as on 30 Nov., 2014) where GSDP means Gross State Domestic Product as Constant 2004-05 Prices.
