The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005 provides for the enhancement of livelihood security of the households in rural areas of the country by providing at least one hundred days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The number of days of employment provided to a household depends on the number of days of employment demanded by the household. The demand for work itself is influenced by various factors such as rainfall pattern, availability of alternative and remunerative employment opportunities outside MGNREGA and prevailing unskilled wage rates.
In total there were 1086.55 lakhs Active workers under MGNREGA during 2016-17 (as on 01.12.2016). Out of which 616.55 lakhs Persons provided employment under MGNREGA during 2016-17 (as on 01.12.2016). It accounted for 56.74% Persons provided employment towards Active workers under MGNREGA during 2016-17 (as on 01.12.2016). The top 10 States/UTs in terms of Percentage of Persons provided employment towards Active workers under MGNREGA during 2016-17 (as on 01.12.2016) were: Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Telangana.
During 2016-17, there were 88.94% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Manipur under MGNREGA. In Manipur Active workers and Persons provided employment were 5.84 lakhs and 5.19 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 85.71% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Nagaland under MGNREGA. In Nagaland Active workers and Persons provided employment were 5.69 lakhs and 4.88 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 79.81% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Mizoram under MGNREGA. In Mizoram Active workers and Persons provided employment were 2.53 lakhs and 2.02 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 79.19% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Tripura under MGNREGA. In Tripura Active workers and Persons provided employment were 10.73 lakhs and 8.5 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA.
During 2016-17, there were 77.87% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Tamil Nadu under MGNREGA. In Tamil Nadu Active workers and Persons provided employment were 89.99 lakhs and 70.08 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 75.2% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Arunachal Pradesh under MGNREGA. In Arunachal Pradesh Active workers and Persons provided employment were 2.24 lakhs and 1.68 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 74.57% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Jharkhand under MGNREGA. In Jharkhand Active workers and Persons provided employment were 26.56 lakhs and 19.81 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA.
During 2016-17, there were 73.58% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Andhra Pradesh under MGNREGA. In Andhra Pradesh Active workers and Persons provided employment were 80.58 lakhs and 59.29 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 71.47% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Sikkim under MGNREGA. In Sikkim Active workers and Persons provided employment were 0.92 lakhs and 0.66 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA. During 2016-17, there were 70.77% Persons provided employment towards Active workers in Telangana under MGNREGA. In Telangana Active workers and Persons provided employment were 55.91 lakhs and 39.57 lakhs respectively, during the same time period under MGNREGA.
