Top 10 States/UTs in terms of Central share released under Saakshar Bharat Programme during 2016-17

Saakshar Bharat Programme is being implemented in rural areas of 410 districts in 26 States and one UT that have adult female literacy rate of 50 per cent and below as per Census 2001, and left wing extremism affected districts with the principal target of imparting functional literacy to 70 million adults including 60 million women. The main focus of the programme is on women and other disadvantaged groups.

The Central share released in India under Saakshar Bharat Programme (SBP) was Rs. 34634.7 lakhs, Rs. 33213.52 lakhs and Rs. 18284.7 lakhs during 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 (as on 25.11.2016) respectively. We have seen a decline of -4.1% and -44.95% in central share released in India under SBP during 2015-16 and 2016-17 (as on 25.11.2016) respectively over previous year. The top 10 States/UTs in terms of central share released under Saakshar Bharat Programme during 2016-17 were: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir and Chhasttisgarh.

Central share released for Uttar Pradesh under SBP was Rs. 5100 lakhs during 2016-17. It accounted for 27.89% of the total central share released in India under this programme during the same period. Central share released for Madhya Pradesh under SBP was Rs. 3744 lakhs during 2016-17. It accounted for 20.48% of the total central share released in India under this programme during the same period. Central share released for Bihar under SBP was Rs. 2340 lakhs during 2016-17. It accounted for 12.8% of the total central share released in India under this programme during the same period. Central share released for Karnataka under SBP was Rs. 1934.4 lakhs during 2016-17. It accounted for 10.58% of the total central share released in India under this programme during the same period. Central share released for Telangana under SBP was Rs. 1560 lakhs during 2016-17. It accounted for 8.53% of the total central share released in India under this programme during the same period.

These top 5 states accounted for 80.28% of the total central share released under Saakshar Bharat Programme in India as a whole during 2016-17 (as on 25.11.2016).

Central share released under SBP for Tamil Nadu was Rs. 878.66 lakhs during 2016-17; which accounted 4.81% of the total central share released in India under this programme. Central share released under SBP for Haryana was Rs. 752.75 lakhs during 2016-17; which accounted 4.12% of the total central share released in India under this programme. Central share released under SBP for West Bengal was Rs. 748.8 lakhs during 2016-17; which accounted 4.1% of the total central share released in India under this programme. Central share released under SBP for Jammu & Kashmir was Rs. 585 lakhs during 2016-17; which accounted 3.2% of the total central share released in India under this programme. Central share released under SBP for Chhasttisgarh was Rs. 580.5 lakhs during 2016-17; which accounted 3.17% of the total central share released in India under this programme.

The above mentioned top 10 states accounted for 99.67% of the total central share released under Saakshar Bharat Programme in India as a whole during 2016-17 (as on 25.11.2016).
