The Central Government has launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY (U)) on 25 June, 2015 to facilitate the efforts of States / Union Territories (UTs) to address the housing shortage among the urban poor. The Government has taken various initiatives to improve the performance under PMAY (U) so as to provide Housing for All by 2022.
The total of 261,802 houses grounded under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18, up by 187.8% against 90,964 during 2016-17. The top 10 metro cities with respect to houses grounded under PMAY (U) during 2017-18 were Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Jabalpur, Indore, Navi Mumbai, Chennai and Jodhpur.
The number of houses grounded in Hyderabad under PMAY (U) was 100,947 during 2017-18, up by 94,243% versus 107 during 2016-17. We have observed annual growth of 3.7% in houses grounded under PMAY (U) in Ahmedabad from 14,877 during 2016-17 to 15,434 during 2017-18. The number of houses grounded in Surat was 10,641 under PMAY (U) in 2016-17. It has surged by 31.8% to 14,023 during 2017-18 above 2016-17. Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Surat accounted for 38.56%, 5.9% and 5.36% respectively of the total houses grounded under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18.
There was ground of 11,288 and 10,175 houses under PMAY (U) in Bhopal and Visakhapatnam respectively during 2017-18. Bhopal accounted for 4.31% and Visakhapatnam accounted for 3.89% of the total houses grounded under PMAY (U) in metro cities in India during 2017-18.
During 2017-18, the number of houses grounded under PMAY (U) in Jabalpur, Indore, Navi Mumbai, Chennai and Jodhpur was 9,947, 9,575, 9,080, 7,941 and 7,009 respectively.
