Telecom Service Area-wise Rural/Urban Internet Subscriber base as on 31st March 2016

As on 31st March 2016, the internet subscriber base in India was 342.65 million; out of which 111.94 million (32.67%) was from rural area of India and 230.71 million (67.33%) was from urban area of India.

The top 5 telecom service areas in terms of internet subscriber base in India was Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and UP (East) as on 31st March 2016. The number of internet subscriber base was 29.47, 28.01, 24.87, 22.63 and 22.47 million in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and UP (East) respectively as on 31-03-2016.

As on 31st March 2016, the number of internet subscriber base was 9.76 million (33%) in rural area and 19.72 million (67%) in urban area of Maharashtra. Out of the total internet subscriber base in Tamil Nadu, there were 6.86 million (24%) and 21.16 million (76%) internet subscribers from rural area and urban area respectively as on 31-03-2016. Out of the total internet subscriber base in Andhra Pradesh, 9.13 million (37%) internet subscribers were from rural area and 15.73 million (63%) internet subscribers were from urban area as on 31-03-2016.

The number of internet subscriber base was 5.54 million (24%) and 17.09 million (76%) in rural and urban area respectively of Karnataka as on 31st March 2016. Out of the total internet subscriber base in UP (East), there were 11.21 million (50%) internet subscribers from rural area and 11.27 million (50%) internet subscribers from urban area as on 31-03-2016.

Three telecom service areas, viz., Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh having more internet subscriber base in rural area than urban area as on 31st March 2016.
