State/UT-wise Infant Mortality Rate during 2015-16

The infant mortality rate (IMR) is the number of deaths under one year of age occurring among the live births in a given geographical area during a given year, per 1,000 live births occurring among the population of the given geographical area during the same year.

As per NFHS-4, Infant mortality rate declined in India from 57 in 2005-06 to 41 in 2015-16. Infant mortality rate in rural areas was 46 in 2015-16 and in urban areas, Infant mortality rate was 29 in 2015-16.

Uttar Pradesh had highest Infant mortality rate (64) during 2015-16 and 73 was in 2005-06. Kerala had lowest Infant mortality rate (6) during 2015-16 and 15 was in 2005-06 in comparison to other states.

Six States/UTs viz. Uttar Pradesh (64), Chhattisgarh (54), Madhya Pradesh (51), Assam (48), Bihar (48) and Jharkhand (44) were above the National value i.e. 41 during 2015-16.
