State/UT-wise Teachers working at Elementary level as on 31.03.2017

As on 31.03.2017, the number of posts sanctioned for teachers at Elementary level was 5103539; out of which 3170141 posts were sanctioned by States/UTs and 1933398 posts were sanctioned under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). Out of the total 5103539 sanctioned posts; 4203223 (82.4%) teachers were working at Elementary level as on 31.03.2017. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of number of teachers working at Elementary level as on 31.03.2017 were Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The number of teachers working at Elementary level was 535501 in Uttar Pradesh as on 31.03.2017; out of which 207256 (38.7%) teachers were working under state and 328245 (61.3%) teachers were working under SSA. Uttar Pradesh accounted for 12.7% of the total teachers working at Elementary level in India as on 31.03.2017. There were 388607 working teachers at Elementary level in Bihar as on 31.03.2017, which accounted 9.2% of the total teachers working at Elementary level in India. Out of the total 388607 working teachers, 108119 (27.8%) teachers were working under state and 280488 (72.2%) teachers were working under SSA as on 31.03.2017. The number of teachers working at Elementary level was 367079 in West Bengal as on 31.03.2017; out of which 221229 (60.3%) teachers were working under state and 145850 (39.7%) teachers were working under SSA. West Bengal accounted for 8.7% of the total teachers working at Elementary level in India as on 31.03.2017.

As on 31.03.2017, there were 296576 and 296267 working teachers at Elementary level in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively as on 31.03.2017. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra accounted for 7.1% and 7% respectively of the total teachers working at Elementary level in India as on 31.03.2017. Out of the total 296576 teachers working in Madhya Pradesh, 152204 (51.3%) teachers were working under state and 144372 (48.7%) teachers were working under SSA as on 31.03.2017. Out of the total 296267 teachers working in Maharashtra, 280880 (94.8%) teachers were working under state and 15387 (5.2%) teachers were working under SSA as on 31.03.2017.
