State/UT-wise Suicides in India due to Insanity/Mental Illness during 2018

During 2018, there were 1,34,516 suicides in India; out of which 10,134 (7.53%) were due to insanity/mental illness. Out of 10,134 suicides due to insanity/mental illness during 2018; 7101 (70.07%), 3032 (29.92%) and 1 (0.01%) were male, female and transgender respectively. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness during 2018 were Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The number of persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness was 1,268 in Madhya Pradesh during 2018, which accounted 12.51% of the total persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness in India. Out of 1,268 suicides in Madhya Pradesh; 837 (66.01%) were male, 431 (33.99%) were female and 0 was transgender. There were 1,162 suicides due to insanity/mental illness in Maharashtra during 2018. It accounted 11.47% of the total persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness in India during the same period. Out of 1,162 suicides in Maharashtra; 796 (68.5%), 366 (31.5%) and 0 were male, female and transgender respectively. The number of persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness was 1,030 in Kerala during 2018, which accounted 10.16% of the total persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness in India. Out of 1,030 suicides in Kerala; 774 (75.15%) were male, 256 (24.85%) were female and 0 was transgender.

There were 1,013 and 987 suicides due to insanity/mental illness in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu respectively during 2018. Karnataka accounted for 10% and Tamil Nadu accounted for 9.74% of the total persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness in India during 2018.

These aforementioned top 5 states accounted for 53.88% of the total persons committed suicide due to insanity/mental illness in India as a whole during 2018.
