Sector wise FDI inflows in Agriculture of India from 2013-14 to 2016-17

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 100 percent is permitted under automatic route in specified activities of the agriculture and allied sectors. Further, 100 percent FDI is also allowed under automatic route in the plantation sector namely tea, coffee, rubber, cardamom, palm oil tree and olive oil tree.

Most of the people of our country, India depend upon Agriculture sector. So there is no proposal to include other agriculture areas under FDI policy to safeguard the interests of poor farmers of our country for whom agriculture is mainstay of livelihood.

During the last 4 years during 2013-14 to 2016-17 (till September 2016), there was FDI inflow of US $ 250.48 million in Agriculture of India. We had seen FDI inflow of US $ 91.01 million in Agriculture of India during 2013-14. We had seen FDI inflow of US $ 59.95 million in Agriculture of India during 2014-15, which had a growth of -34.13% over 2013-14. We had seen FDI inflow of US $ 84.65 million in Agriculture of India during 2015-16, which had a growth of 41.2% over 2014-15. We had seen FDI inflow of US $ 14.86 million in Agriculture of India during 2016-17 (till September 2016).

In Agriculture there were sectors namely Horticulture, Hybrid seeds & Plantation, Floriculture and Others (agriculture services); where we had seen FDI inflow from 2013-14 to 2016-17 (till September 2016). In ‘Horticulture’ Sector there was FDI inflow of US $ 3.8 million, which accounted for 1.5% of total FDI inflow in Agriculture during these 4 years. In ‘Hybrid seeds & Plantation’ Sector there was FDI inflow of US $ 94.71 million, which accounted for 37.8% of total FDI inflow in Agriculture during these 4 years. In ‘Floriculture’ Sector there was FDI inflow of US $ 0.77 million, which accounted for 0.3% of total FDI inflow in Agriculture during these 4 years. In ‘others (agriculture services)’ Sector there was FDI inflow of US $ 151.2 million, which accounted for 60.4% of total FDI inflow in Agriculture during these 4 years.
