Road Accidents on National Highways in India from 2015 to 2018

Road accidents occur due to multiple causes. Some of the causes are use of Mobile phone, drunken driving/consumption of alcohol/drug, overloaded Vehicle, poor light condition, jumping red light, over speeding, overtaking, neglect of civic bodies, weather condition, driving on wrong side, defect in road condition, defect in condition of motor vehicle, fault of cyclist and fault of pedestrian etc.

The number of road accidents on National Highways was 1,42,268 in 2015. It has increased by 6 basis points to 1,42,359 during 2016 above 2015. In absolute term the increase was 91 during 2016 above 2015. We have observed annual de-growth of -44 basis points in road accidents on National Highways to 1,40,843 during 2018 against 1,41,466 during 2017. In absolute term the decrease was -623 during 2018 above 2017.
