August 8, 2017

“Hackathons are where your crazy ideas becomes reality” – Alex Karn, Hacker

A Hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event where people come together to solve problems. By taking the time to sit and think about the problems around us and then innovating real solutions to these matters, projects made during these 24 hours, solve issues that then allow further progress. Software graduates, developers, start-ups and community members participate in this sprint-like event.

Open Government Data (OGD) Platform India – data.gov.in – is a platform for supporting Open Data initiative of Government of India. It intends to increase transparency in the functioning of Government and also open avenues for many more innovative uses of Government Data to give different perspective.

Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone – subject only, at most, to the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP ).

For Open Data to have impact and value, it must be put to use. Hence, making data usable is the core component of a successful Open Data initiative. OGD organizes Hackathons (challenges) to accomplish this initiative. Two indicators of a successful OGD Hackathons are when developers harness Open Data to produce new and valuable Apps/ Infographics for citizens of India.

Please visit Apps Gallery at OGD Platform to get insight of apps built on Open Gov Data. To name a few; Hospital Way App (Health Sector Data) and Mandi Trades App (Agriculture Sector Data). Many were developed during Hackathons to promote the use of Open Data for specific purposes.

So get out there and get to know OGD Upcoming Hackathons, folks.
