Leprosy Eradication in Tamil Nadu 2018

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The disease mainly affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes. Leprosy is known to occur at all ages ranging from early infancy to very old age.

Based on the time series data published in Statistical Hand Book 2018, by the Department of Economics and Statistics, the graph shown below, clearly depicts the pattern of Number of Leprosy Cases detected, under treatment and Number of cases cured in Tamil Nadu over a period of 20 years from 1996-97 to 2016-17.

The graph also gives a conclusion that due to the growth of Awareness among the people, Number of Cases detected, brought under Treatment and Cases Cured in the period 2016-17 have come down, when compared to the period 1996-97.
