Import of Major Chemicals from 2007-08 to 2013-14

September 29, 2014

India imports various chemicals from foreign countries. The data shows the imports of various major chemicals, viz., Alkali Chemicals, Inorganic Chemicals, Organic Chemicals, Pesticides & Insecticides and Dyes & Dyestuff during the period from 2007-08 to 2013-14. The imports of major chemicals have increased from 1922453 metric tonnes in 2007-08 to 3721243 metric tonnes in 2013-14, showing a growth rate of 93.57% during the said period. The annual growth rate during this period is 15.59%.

In value terms, the imports of major chemicals have increased from 504688 Lakhs in 2007-08 to 1703543 Lakhs in 2013-14, showing a growth rate of 237.54% during the said period at current prices. The annual growth rate in value terms during this period is 39.59% at current prices. The rate of growth in value terms i.e. 39.59% per annum is much more in comparison to the rate of growth in quantity terms i.e. 15.59% per annum. This is partly due to inflation and partly due to the fact that various chemical imports of India have moved up the value chain and import is taking place of more valuable high end products and/or from the foreign markets/countries, where they are available at higher prices.
