Growth of Overseas Fleet by Size of Vessels from 2010 to 2014

The Indian Shipping has shown lacklustre growth from the year 2010 to the year 2014 in terms of the number of vessels as per size in Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT). Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) applies to the vessel and not to cargo. It is the weight of the volume occupied by the closed in space of a ship taking 100 cubic feet of such closed in spaces as equivalent to one vessel ton. It thus refers to the cubic capacity of the vessels.

The total number of vessels in the Indian overseas fleet in the year 2010 was 340. In terms of the size in GRT, the  number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the size-below 999 was 15 vessels (4.41% of total overseas fleet);  size-1000-4999 was 79 vessels (23.24% of total overseas fleet);  size-5000-9999 was 25 vessels (7.35% of total overseas fleet);  size-10000-19999 was 38 vessels (11.18% of total overseas fleet);  size-20000-34999 was 83 vessels (24.41% of total overseas fleet);  size-35000-49999 was 43 vessels (12.65% of total overseas fleet);  size-50000-84999 was 50 vessels (14.71% of total overseas fleet);  size-85000 & above was 7 vessels (2.06% of total overseas fleet).

The total number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the year 2011 increased to 372. In terms of the size in GRT, the  number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the size-below 999 was 24 vessels (6.45% of total overseas fleet);  size-1000-4999 was 83 vessels (22.31% of total overseas fleet);  size-5000-9999 was 28 vessels (7.53% of total overseas fleet);  size-10000-19999 was 36 vessels (9.68% of total overseas fleet);  size-20000-34999 was 91 vessels (24.46% of total overseas fleet);  size-35000-49999 was 48 vessels (12.9% of total overseas fleet);  size-50000-84999 was 54 vessels (14.52% of total overseas fleet);  size-85000 & above was 8 vessels (2.15% of total overseas fleet).

The total number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the year 2012 decreased to 350. In terms of the size in GRT, the  number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the size-below 999 was 26 vessels (7.43% of total overseas fleet);  size-1000-4999 was 82 vessels (23.43% of total overseas fleet);  size-5000-9999 was 29 vessels (8.29% of total overseas fleet);  size-10000-19999 was 31 vessels (8.86% of total overseas fleet);  size-20000-34999 was 79 vessels (22.57% of total overseas fleet);  size-35000-49999 was 43 vessels (12.29% of total overseas fleet);  size-50000-84999 was 52 vessels (14.86% of total overseas fleet);  size-85000 & above was 8 vessels (2.29% of total overseas fleet).

The total number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the year 2013 increased to 364. In terms of the size in GRT, the  number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the size-below 999 was 28 vessels (7.69% of total overseas fleet);  size-1000-4999 was 96 vessels (26.37% of total overseas fleet);  size-5000-9999 was 30 vessels (8.24% of total overseas fleet);  size-10000-19999 was 29 vessels (7.97% of total overseas fleet);  size-20000-34999 was 79 vessels (21.7% of total overseas fleet);  size-35000-49999 was 44 vessels (12.09% of total overseas fleet);  size-50000-84999 was 50 vessels (13.74% of total overseas fleet);  size-85000 & above was 8 vessels (2.2% of total overseas fleet).

The total number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the year 2014 decreased to 358. In terms of the size in GRT, the  number of vessels in the overseas fleet in the size-below 999 was 29 vessels (8.1% of total overseas fleet);  size-1000-4999 was 95 vessels (26.54% of total overseas fleet);  size-5000-9999 was 29 vessels (8.1% of total overseas fleet);  size-10000-19999 was 26 vessels (7.26% of total overseas fleet);  size-20000-34999 was 77 vessels (21.51% of total overseas fleet);  size-35000-49999 was 46 vessels (12.85% of total overseas fleet);  size-50000-84999 was 48 vessels (13.41% of total overseas fleet);  size-85000 & above was 8 vessels (2.23% of total overseas fleet).
