Growth in Number of Universities/Deemed to be Universities in India during 2008-2011

The number of Universities/Deemed to be Universities grew by 42.4% from 436 in 2009-10 to 621 in 2010-11. In 2010-11, Tamil Nadu had the highest number of Universities/Deemed to be Universities (59), while Uttar Pradesh (56) and Andhra Pradesh (46) occupied second and third position respectively. 46.9% of Universities/Deemed to be Universities in India were in 6 states i.e. Tamil Nadu (9.5%), Uttar Pradesh (9%), Andhra Pradesh (7.4%), Maharashtra (7.1%), Karnataka (6.9%) and Rajasthan (6.9%).
