Fund Released under POSHAN Abhiyaan during 2017-18 & 2018-19

The Ministry of Women & Child Development has implemented Umbrella Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme for attending the need of the children in India, especially to improve their nutritional and childhood development. Under the Umbrella ICDS, various schemes namely (i) Anganwadi Services, (ii) Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojna, (iii) Scheme for Adolescent Girls, and (iv) POSHAN Abhiyaan are implemented specifically dealing with the issue of malnutrition.

The POSHAN Abhiyaan aims to reduce malnutrition in the country through a life cycle approach, by adopting a synergized and result oriented approach. The targets of the POSHAN are to reduce stunting in children (0-6 years), under-nutrition (underweight prevalence) in children (0-6 years) and low birth weight @2% per annum and reduce anaemia among young children (6-59 months), women and adolescent girls @3% per annum across the country.

The total fund released under POSHAN Abhiyaan was Rs. 255,593.99 lakhs in India during 2018-19, up by 337% against Rs. 58,453.97 lakhs during 2017-18. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to fund released under POSHAN Abhiyaan during 2018-19 were Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Assam.

The amount of Rs. 8,440.6 lakhs was released under POSHAN Abhiyaan for Uttar Pradesh during 2017-18. It has surged by 250% to Rs. 29,582.87 lakhs during 2018-19 above 2017-18. We have seen annual growth of 716% in release of fund under POSHAN Abhiyaan for Maharashtra to Rs. 20,989.28 lakhs during 2018-19 from Rs. 2,572.31 lakhs during 2017-18. There was a release of Rs. 19,294.11 lakhs for West Bengal under POSHAN Abhiyaan during 2018-19, up by 248% versus Rs. 5,545.27 lakhs during 2017-18. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal accounted for 11.57%, 8.21% and 7.55% respectively of the total fund released under POSHAN Abhiyaan in India during 2018-19.

During 2018-19, the fund released under POSHAN Abhiyaan for Madhya Pradesh and Assam was Rs. 15,894.17 lakhs and Rs. 15,492.36 lakhs respectively. Madhya Pradesh accounted for 6.22% and Assam accounted for 6.06% of the total fund released under POSHAN Abhiyaan in India during 2018-19.
