Functioning Sub-centres during five year plans – upto Eleventh Plan

The number of Sub-centres increased from 84376 in 1985 (at end of Sixth Plan) to 148366 in 2012 (at end of Eleventh Plan) showing addition of 63990 Sub-centres with overall growth rate of 75.84% during the period.

Five year plan wise growth is: Sub-centres increased from 84376 in 1985 (at end of Sixth Plan) to 130165 in 1990 (at end of Seventh Plan) showing addition of 45789 Sub-centres (54.27% growth). Sub-centres increased to 136258 in 1997 (at end of Eighth Plan) showing addition of 6093 Sub-centres (4.68% growth). Sub-centres increased to 137311 in 2002 (at end of Ninth Plan) showing addition of 1053 Sub-centres (0.77% growth). Sub-centres increased to 145272 in 2002 (at end of Ninth Plan) showing addition of 7961 Sub-centres (5.80% growth). Sub-centres increased to 148366 in 2012 (at end of Eleventh Plan) showing addition of 3094 Sub-centres (2.13% growth).

Top 5 States with highest growth in number of Sub-centres during 1985-2012 were: Rajasthan (7697 Sub-centres added), Andhra Pradesh (6393 Sub-centres added), Uttar Pradesh (4868 Sub-centres added), West Bengal (4256 Sub-centres added) and Maharashtra (4189 Sub-centres added).

Note: There is a reduction in the number of Centres functioning at the end of 10th Plan as compared to those functioning at the end of Ninth Plan due to the division of State in case of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; Reduction in number of Sub Centres in Assam as on March, 2008 is due to upgradation /actual Status of functioning as per clarification by the State; There is a reduction in number of Sub Centres and PHCs in Kerala due to Standardization of Health Institutions during 2009 as reported by the State.
