Frequency of Cyclones in India from 1891 to 2019

A ‘Cyclonic Storm’ or a ‘Cyclone’ is an intense vortex or a whirl in the atmosphere with very strong winds circulating around it in anti-clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and in clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere.

India has witnessed a total of 666 cyclones during 1891 to 2019. We have observed maximum of 10 cyclones in every year during 1893, 1926, 1930 and 1976 in India during the period under consideration. The second highest of 8 cyclones has been seen in every year during 1896, 1903, 1907, 1916, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1944, 1966 and 2019 in India during the period under consideration. We have found third highest of 7 cyclones in every year during 1898, 1902, 1906, 1925, 1927, 1928, 1939, 1943, 1964, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1985 and 2018 in India during the period under consideration.
