FDI Equity inflows in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities from 2005-06 to 2016-17

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an investment made by an organization/entity in one country in an industrial/business activity in another country. FDI can take place in the form of establishing new business operations from scratch or acquiring existing business assets in the other country. FDI includes mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, expansion of existing production capacity, etc. FDI usually involves control/participation in management, joint-venture, management expertise and technology transfer. It excludes investment through purchase of securities or portfolio foreign investment, a passive investment in the securities of another country e.g. shares and bonds.

There was a lot of volatility in the annual FDI inflows in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities Sector during the period 2005-06 to 2016-17. We have observed a drastic growth of 418.32% in FDI inflows in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities Sector from $ 870.25 million during 2014-15 to $ 4510.71 million during 2015-16. In the next year during 2016-17, we have seen a decline of -58.75% in FDI inflows in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities Sector from $ 4510.71 million during 2015-16 to $ 1860.73 million during 2016-17.

The amount of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities was $ 0.93 million during 2005-06. The share of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities to total FDI inflow in India was 0.02% during 2005-06. The amount of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities was $ 64.06 million during 2006-07. It increased by $ 63.13 million as compared to 2005-06. In percentage term the increase was 6788.17%. The share of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities to total FDI inflow in India was 0.51% during 2006-07.

The amount of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities was $ 675.07 million during 2010-11. It increased by $ 350.51 million as compared to 2009-10. In percentage term the increase was 108%. The share of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities to total FDI inflow in India was 3.16% during 2010-11. The amount of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities was $ 870.25 million during 2014-15. It increased by $ 384.88 million as compared to 2013-14. In percentage terms the increase was 79.3%. The share of FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities to total FDI inflow in India was 2.81% during 2014-15.

The maximum annual growth of $ 4510.71 million was recorded in FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities in the year 2015-16 during the period under consideration. In percentage term the maximum annual growth of 6788.17% was observed in FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities in the year 2006-07 during the period under consideration. The maximum share of 11.28% was recorded in FDI inflow in Construction (Infrastructure) Activities to total FDI inflow in India in the year 2015-16 during the period under consideration.
