The top 10 states in terms of the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act were: Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh during the year 2014.

The number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in Maharashtra was 14622 during the year 2014. It accounted for 31.16% of the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in India during the year 2014. The number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in Punjab was 14483 during the year 2014. It accounted for 30.87% of the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in India during the year 2014. In case of the state of Punjab, the number of cases registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act: 1985 was 52.07% of the total number of cases registered under Special and Local Laws (SLL) crimes in Punjab state itself during the year 2014.
